bindro vs Checkfront for dive shops and certification

bindro vs Checkfront for dive shops and certification: the short answer

Checkfront is a long-established booking system for tours, rentals and activities, and dive operators are one of many trades it serves. bindro serves one of those trades properly: the medical questionnaire, the RSTC statement and the waiver are built into the booking, and application review means nobody is charged before a human has read them. Breadth is theirs; the medical gate is ours.

Where is Checkfront stronger?

Checkfront has been doing this for far longer, across many more trades, and that shows in the places bindro is deliberately thin: distribution to booking channels and agents, rental inventory with equipment out and back, multiple currencies and the long tail of integrations an established platform accumulates. If your dive business is really a multi-activity operation — kayaks, snorkel trips, gear hire, accommodation — a general activity platform will fit that shape better than a vertical built around certification courses.

Where does bindro fit instead?

bindro fits a centre whose core product is instruction: courses that run over several days, divers who must not pay before their medical form has been read, deposits and instalments on a certification fee, packs of dives drawn down over a season, and payouts that wait until the course has actually been delivered. The configuration is the dive vertical rather than a general booking product bent into shape with custom fields.

How do they compare line by line?

How the vertical is handled Dive courses are a configured vertical: medical questionnaire, RSTC statement, waiver, certification level and equipment sizing are the shipped form, and health answers are classed as health data by the platform.A general booking platform serving many activity trades, configured to your business with custom fields and forms.
Payment held until the form is read Application review files the booking with no order and no payment intent; the approvals queue shows the answers and opens the uploaded statement.Supports request-style bookings; check their current documentation for exactly when payment is captured relative to your approval.
Multi-day courses A course is an event with a session per day, each with its own capacity. The hosted checkout sells one session per order; several sessions in one order go through the JSON API or the console.Multi-day and multi-item bookings are long-standing functionality — likely more flexible in the public checkout than ours is today.
Deposits and instalments Published from the console on the ticket type; the deposit is taken at checkout and plan money is held as a liability until the final charge. The balance is not collected automatically — you collect it on the published dates.Deposits are standard in activity booking systems; check their current documentation for automatic collection of the balance.
Dive packs A pack is sold once and drawn down per dive, held as a liability and earned as it is redeemed rather than counted as revenue up front.Check whether packs or credits exist in their product, and how an unredeemed balance is treated in their reporting.
Distribution Your own page, an embeddable widget, and links you share. No marketplace, no channel manager, no agent network.Channel and agent distribution is a stated part of what they do — a genuine advantage if walk-up and third-party bookings matter to you.
Cost 2.5% plus $0.99 per paid place, no monthly fee.Tiered subscription plans — check their current pricing, including which features sit above the entry tier.

What are we not certain about?

Everything on our side of the table is something the platform declares and the gates check. Everything on theirs is either publicly uncontroversial or listed here.

  • We have not run Checkfront and are not quoting their prices or plan boundaries. Check their current pricing and feature list directly; anything on this page about them is either publicly stated or a question to put to them.
  • Their breadth is the honest reason to choose them. A dive centre that also hires kayaks, runs snorkel tours and books accommodation is a multi-activity business, and this vertical is not built for that.
  • The medical-gate advantage on our side depends entirely on turning application review on for the course. Left off, bindro takes payment first like anything else.

What does bindro NOT do for a dive centre?

Published rather than discovered later. A capability this vertical does not declare is refused by the engine, not quietly missing.

  • No PADI, SSI, RAID or NAUI integration — bindro issues no certification, no eLearning code and no digital card, and transmits nothing to any agency.
  • No assessment of a medical answer: bindro decides only whether a physician’s countersignature is required, never whether a diver is fit to dive, and the clearance queue names the declaration rather than the condition. Judging the countersigned statement, and the sign-off that lifts the door refusal, are the centre’s.
  • No club or buddy roster. Several places go on one order and the booker answers for each diver, but there is no invitation link that lets a buddy fill in their own medical form.
  • No club, school or group rate — the checkout cannot price a place differently because several were bought together.
  • No rescheduling a diver onto another course date. A blown-out dive is refunded and rebooked; bindro cannot move a place from one session to another.
  • No photo or video delivery to divers after the course.
  • No live roster at sea. The door works with the network off, but the copy your crew carries is as fresh as its last sync: a place sold ashore after you cast off is not on it, and it catches up when you are back in coverage.
  • No sales tax added at checkout and no tax report — the price a diver sees is the price that is charged.
  • No waitlist on a full course. A full course says "Course full" and takes no names.
  • No automatic collection of the balance of a plan. You publish the deposit, the number of charges and the interval on the ticket type and the deposit is taken at checkout; bindro never charges the stored card for the rest of it, because it does not bill a card with nobody present. Collect the balance the way you collect anything else.
  • No handing a place to another diver. A diver who cannot come is refunded, and the place does not return to sale by itself — raise the session’s capacity by one to resell it.
  • A diver’s medical answers are anonymised twelve months after their last course, well inside the seven years the signed waiver record is kept. Keep your own copy if your insurer wants the questionnaire itself years later.
  • No dive log, no equipment servicing history, no air-fill or cylinder testing records, no retail till and no rental asset tracking — bindro sells the place, it does not run the shop.
