Driving and rider training: questions, answered

bindro sells driving-school and rider-training courses: places are held per session, the learner permit is uploaded as part of the booking, and with application review on nothing is charged until somebody at the school has opened it. Under-18 learners are admitted only after a parent countersigns on their own email. A course fee is one payment or an invoice to a fleet employer, or a published payment plan whose deposit is taken at checkout and whose balance the school collects itself. bindro is not a licensing authority — it verifies no permit, reports nothing to any DMV and issues no state completion certificate.

What schools ask

How do driving schools handle lesson rescheduling?
Two tools. A learner moves themselves from the link in their confirmation email, up to the notice window in your terms: another date of the same course, the old date straight back on sale, nothing charged or refunded. A different course, or a multi-date booking, stays with you in the console. Deferral is money rather than a date: you defer from the orders page, the learner is emailed a code worth what they paid, good for twelve months, and the value sits as a liability off your balance until it is used — so you are never paid out for a course nobody has taken. Only the school can start one, and the deferred place stays counted, so raise capacity by one to sell it.
How do I take instalment payments for a driving course?
You publish the plan on the ticket type: the deposit as a share of the course fee, how many charges follow it and how far apart they fall. A learner choosing it pays the deposit at checkout, their card leaves a stored mandate and the schedule is written and visible. The engine is well defended — the schedule must total exactly the balance owed, no charge can be marked paid without the provider reference proving it happened, and plan money rests on its own liability account until the last charge clears, so a half-paid course never appears in a payout. THE ONE THING A SCHOOL MUST PLAN AROUND: bindro does not charge the stored card for the balance. That switch is set in no environment on purpose, because a sweep bills somebody with nobody present, so the schedule is a published commitment you collect against rather than a direct debit.
How is parental consent handled for under-18 learners?
By the guardian, on their own email, or the learner is refused at the door. The booking form asks whether the learner is under 18 and, if so, for the parent or guardian’s own address — not the booker’s. Confirming the order raises a countersign request inside the same transaction as the payment and emails the guardian a link they open and sign themselves. Until they do, that learner’s pass does not admit them: check-in refuses it, so an unsigned consent is a door refusal rather than a flag nobody reads. The booker’s checkbox stays what it honestly is — the buyer’s commitment — because the person filling in the form is often the school or the learner.
Can I stop a learner paying before I have seen their permit?
Yes, and it is the strongest thing this vertical does. Turn on application review for the course and a booking no longer creates an order at all: it files an application, the place is held while you decide, and no payment intent exists — so there is nothing to capture and nothing to refund if the answer is no. The answers and the uploaded permit appear in your approvals queue, you open the image and decide, and approving emails the learner a link to pay. Rejecting releases the place, tells them, and scrubs what they submitted.
Does bindro check that a learner permit is real or still valid?
No, and nothing on this site will imply otherwise. The permit number is a required text field that bindro stores and never validates, and the permit photo is a file it stores and never reads. There is no connection to any state licensing authority, no lookup and no expiry check. What the platform guarantees is that the number was typed and the document was uploaded before the booking could complete, and — where you turn application review on — that no money moved until one of your staff opened the image. The judgement about whether the permit is good is a human one, and it stays yours.
Can bindro enforce my 48-hour cancellation policy?
Yes, if you publish it — and this is the setting to find before you publish a price. On your refund policy page you set the hours before the start at which self-service refunds stop, and the share you keep if a learner cancels inside that window; forty-eight hours and a share is exactly what the field is for. Bindro then applies both without you: it keeps your share, returns the rest to the card that paid, ends the booking and puts the place back on sale. Publish nothing and the default is the one schools assume — everything refundable, in full, until the first session starts, so eleven at night before a nine o’clock lesson is inside that window. Publish a window but keep nothing and a late cancellation comes to you as a request rather than happening by itself. What no terms can do is charge a learner who simply does not arrive, or hold a card against it: a no-show past the start time is a judgement in the console. Schools that depend on late-cancellation income still sell the course rather than the hour, and say so in their terms.
What happens to the place when I refund or defer a learner?
The money moves and the place does not. A refund and a deferral both write ledger entries and set the order’s status, and neither touches inventory: the seat stays counted as sold against that session, so the course does not quietly reopen behind your back. If you want to resell the slot, set that pool’s capacity one higher in the console and it goes back on sale immediately. It is worth knowing the refunded learner’s pass stops working at the same time — a fully refunded booking is not on the check-in list and its code is refused at the door.
How do I sell a course that runs over several weeks?
As one event with a session per week, generated as a series rather than typed date by date. Each session carries its own capacity, its own register and its own attendance record, which is what lets a classroom evening hold twelve and the in-car sessions hold two. One limit to plan the page around: the hosted checkout sells one session per order, so a learner buying from your public page books the course as you published it rather than picking their own weeks. Multi-line bookings across several sessions ship on the JSON API today, and the console can take one on a learner’s behalf.
Can I run a waitlist when a course fills up?
Yes, and the promotion is backed by real inventory rather than by a hopeful email. A full course shows a join form, and joining twice does not buy a better place in the queue. When a seat is genuinely free the worker promotes the front entry with a time-boxed hold and a link into the normal checkout, so the seat is theirs to claim for a day. Read "free" strictly: a plain REFUND does not return the seat to the pool, so a refund on its own promotes nobody — the queue moves when a learner cancels inside a window you published with a share you keep, which ends the booking and returns the seat, when an abandoned hold lapses, or when you raise the capacity.
Can I invoice an employer or a fleet customer instead of taking a card?
Yes, on credit terms with a purchase-order reference. The booking confirms with no card, the places are committed and the passes go out, and the bill goes to the accounts-payable address while the joining details go to the drivers. Nothing pretends the money arrived: no ledger entry is written and your balance does not move until you record the remittance, at which point the invoice, the order and the ledger all move together. Numbering is gapless per organisation, and an invoice left unpaid past its due date is voided automatically — the one path in the platform that does return places to sale.
Does bindro add sales tax to a course fee?
Only if you set a rate, and only price-exclusive, which is the US convention. You put the rate on the event and the tax is derived server-side in the one calculation both the quote and the confirmation use, so the number itemised at checkout is the number charged. Tax is never part of the fee base and never your revenue: it lands on a tax-payable account and payouts settle from your balance, so collected tax cannot be paid out to you by accident. A refund reverses it in order — your proceeds, then tax, then the platform fee.
Can I issue a certificate when a learner finishes the course?
Yes, bindro’s own certificate, issued from attendance rather than from the sale. Once a session has ended you issue certificates for it in one action, and only learners with a check-in record get one: hours come from the session’s length, each carries a serial, and re-issuing never duplicates a credit. Be precise with learners about what it is — your school’s record that this person attended for these hours. It is not a state completion certificate, bindro sends it to no authority, and whatever your jurisdiction requires you to file is filed exactly as you file it today.
Does bindro assign learners to instructors?
Lessons, yes — learners, no. You register each instructor with the hours they are available in a week, and you assign an instructor to a lesson; the platform then refuses to put that person on a second lesson that overlaps it, and reports the hours assigned against the hours available. What it does not model is a binding between an individual LEARNER and an instructor: capacity is still per session, so if Dave can take two learners on Tuesday morning, that is a lesson with a capacity of two and the third booking is refused. Nor is it a diary — no shift patterns, no holiday, no availability to publish against. Keep that where it is.
When does the money from a course reach the school?
Two days after the course has been delivered, never before. Driver training sits in the medium risk tier: a payout is scheduled per delivered event once its sessions have ended, a reserve is held back for ninety days against cancellations and chargebacks, and the rest is transferred. A payout only reaches "paid" when a real transfer reference comes back from the provider — the database refuses to record a payment that moved nothing — so the console cannot tell you money left when it did not. Deposits taken months ahead sit with the platform, not with you, which is the point.
Who can see a learner’s permit, and how long is it kept?
Only the roles you grant, and only for twelve months. The approvals queue — the one place the uploaded permit is opened — needs order-write, which an owner or a manager has and an instructor on door duty does not; permissions come from the role on the membership, so a hand-typed URL is refused by the same check that hides the link. Every learner row here is sensitive, because the under-18 question is asked of everybody, so those answers stay out of analytics and out of every AI feature. An adult learner’s row is anonymised twelve months after their last session; an under-18’s is kept until they or their guardian ask for it to go, because a timer would have to know when they turn eighteen. The waiver record keeps seven years and the consent record ten: the proof survives, the file does not. Export what your licensing authority expects while it is live.
Can I take a booking over the phone or at the office counter?
Yes. The console takes a booking on a learner’s behalf and asks exactly the questions the public form asks, so a phone booking cannot skip the permit number, the guardian’s email or the waiver signature — an incomplete registration is refused there as it is online, and the permit image can be uploaded from the office. A counter payment is recorded as an external payment against the order. Know the consequence before you take cash: there is no card charge behind it, so that booking cannot be refunded through bindro, and you settle it the way you took it.
Can I sell a block of ten lessons as a prepaid pack?
Yes. Publish the block on your class-packs page — a name, how many credits it carries, the price and how long it stays valid — and the price has to divide exactly by the credits, so a credit is worth a whole number of pence and nothing is stranded. A learner buys it once and spends a credit per lesson. The money is held as a LIABILITY until a credit is actually used: an unspent block is never part of a payout, which is the point of the accounting and the reason a school cannot be paid for lessons it has not taught. The other shape still works too, and is simpler if the ten lessons are one fixed course: publish them as a session series at the price of ten, which is one booking, one payment and a register per lesson.
What does bindro cost a driving school?
Two and a half per cent plus ninety-nine cents on each paid place, and nothing at all on a free course or a comp place. There is no monthly fee, no setup fee, no contract and no minimum, so a school that runs two courses a month pays for two courses a month. You choose whether the fee comes out of your proceeds or is added at checkout. Signing up needs no verification: that is required before your first payout, never before your first sale — though a payout also needs a payout destination connected, so do that early rather than in the week you expect money.

What learners ask

What do I need to have ready before I book a course?
Your date of birth, your learner permit number, a photo or scan of the permit itself, a phone number and an emergency contact — and, if you are under 18, a parent or guardian’s own email address. A photo taken on your phone is normally fine. The booking cannot complete without them: the school has to see the permit before your first lesson, and asking afterwards means asking somebody who has already paid. You also type your name to sign the liability waiver. What you upload is openable only by staff at your school whose role allows it, never used for marketing, and anonymised twelve months after your last session — or, if you are under 18, kept until you or your guardian ask us to erase it from your booking’s privacy page.
I am under 18 — what does my parent or guardian have to do?
They sign, themselves, on their own email. When the booking says you are under 18 it asks for their address rather than yours, and they are emailed a link that opens a page where they type their name to countersign the consent. It is not a box somebody else can tick for them. Until they have signed it, your pass does not admit you: the school’s check-in refuses it, however good your booking looks. So book early enough that the email is not sitting unread the morning of your first lesson, and check the address you gave for them is right.
Can I pay for my course in instalments?
Where your school has published a plan on the course, yes: you pay the deposit at checkout, your place is confirmed from that moment, and the remaining amounts and their dates are shown to you as part of the booking. The deposit and the dates are the school’s to choose — you are only choosing whether to use the plan, and you are never asked to name an amount. What bindro does not do is take those amounts off your card by itself; the school collects them from you on the published dates. A course with no plan published is the full price at checkout, and many schools instead publish a long course as a series of shorter ones you book as you go.
Can I cancel or move my course after I have booked?
You can do both yourself, from the link in your confirmation email. Cancelling refunds you in full at any time until the first session starts, back to the card that paid, without waiting for the office to open. Moving takes you to another date of the same course, as long as it has room and you are inside the notice your school publishes: nothing is charged or refunded and your old date goes straight back on sale. After the start time, or past the notice, both close and it is the school’s decision — a school keeping your money in the business defers the booking and emails you a credit code worth what you paid, good for twelve months.
How old do I have to be to book a driving or rider course?
Fourteen is the floor the platform enforces, and it is enforced when the booking is made rather than discovered at the kerb: a date of birth under the minimum is refused on the spot with the rule named, and an unreadable date is refused too. Fourteen is the youngest learner age across the jurisdictions this vertical supports, not a promise that you can drive at fourteen where you live — your school holds you to what its state licensing authority requires and can set a higher floor.
Will bindro give me my licence or send anything to the DMV?
No. bindro takes the booking and the payment for the course; everything to do with your permit, your test and your licence happens between you, your school and your state licensing authority, exactly as it would if you had booked by phone. Your school can issue you a bindro certificate showing the hours and a serial number once you have been checked in on the sessions, and that is useful as a record of attendance — but it is your school’s document, not a state one, and nothing about it is transmitted anywhere.
Can I give my place to a friend if I cannot go?
No. There is no transfer in this vertical, so a place cannot be renamed and a pass cannot be handed on — the right answer for a course where the school has checked a specific person’s permit and, for an under-18, holds a specific guardian’s signature. What you can do is cancel yourself for a full refund before the first session starts and let your friend book in their own name. If the course is full, note that your cancellation does not itself reopen the seat — ask the school to add one.

What does bindro NOT do for a school?

A capability this vertical does not declare is refused by the engine rather than quietly missing, so it is listed here rather than left to be discovered.

  • No fleet rate or family rate. Prepaid lesson blocks DO work — you publish a block of credits, a learner buys it and spends one per lesson, and the money is held as a liability until a credit is used. What is refused is the group-registration capability this vertical does not declare, so a per-quantity fleet or family price cannot be published; publish a separate course at a separate price instead.
  • bindro enforces the cancellation terms you publish, and nothing beyond them. Publish nothing and the platform default applies: a learner refunds themselves in full from the link in their confirmation email at any time up to the moment the first session starts. Publish a notice window and the share you keep inside it and bindro applies both — it keeps your share, returns the rest, ends the booking and puts the place back on sale — but a school that publishes a window and keeps nothing gets a request to decide instead. What no terms can do here is charge a learner who simply does not arrive, hold a card against that, or add an admin fee on top of the share you published. After the start time the decision is yours in the console.
  • A refunded or deferred place does not go back on sale by itself: the money moves and the seat stays counted, so raise the pool capacity by one to resell that slot.
  • A learner reschedules to another DATE OF THE SAME COURSE and nothing else. From their own booking page, up to the notice window in your published terms, the place moves and comes straight back on sale on the old date. It cannot move them to a different course, and a booking spanning several dates has to be moved by the school. Deferral is the other tool and is unchanged: a credit code worth what they paid, spendable for twelve months, and only the school can start it.
  • The BALANCE of a payment plan is not collected automatically. A school publishes the deposit, the number of charges and the interval on the ticket type and the deposit is taken at checkout, but bindro never charges the stored card for the rest: off-session charging is armed by a separate switch that is set in no environment, because a sweep bills somebody with nobody present. Collect the balance yourself on the published dates.
  • An instructor is a name and a weekly hour count, not a diary. You register your instructors, assign one to each lesson, and the platform refuses to put the same person in two overlapping hours — so utilisation is measured in hours rather than guessed from seats. What it is NOT is a rota tool: there is no shift pattern, no holiday, no availability calendar to publish against, and nothing about cars, servicing or mileage.
  • Nothing is reported to a DMV or state licensing authority and nothing is verified with one. The permit number is a text field bindro never checks; the uploaded permit is bytes for a human to look at. The completion certificate bindro prints is its own — hours, a serial and verified attendance — and is not a state-recognised certificate.
  • No offline door for this vertical. Check-in is a name list that needs a signal, so a meeting point with no coverage is worked from a list loaded before you left.
  • No handing a place to another learner. A learner who cannot come is refunded or deferred; there is no transfer that renames the pass.
  • An adult learner’s details — date of birth, permit number, emergency contact — are anonymised twelve months after their last session, because the under-18 question makes the row health-classed. An under-18’s row is not on a timer: it is kept until the learner or their guardian asks, from the booking’s own privacy page. The waiver record keeps seven years and the consent record ten, so what survives is the proof, not the file.
